Berbera College Technical Assistance Program) First Phase finalized
The College was founded in 2005. It is located in the historical port city of
Berbera on the south side of Gulf of Aden . It is a teaching, training and
research institution whose primary aim is to take a leading role in the
sustainable development and utilization of national marine resources.
The college forms the single higher learning institution in Berbera and first
of it's type in the Horn of Africa.
After the establishment of Berbera College of Fisheries and Maritime
Studies ,it has been a moment of starting from grassroots, still the
greatest challenges are of qualified lecturers, shortage of teaching-learning
facilities, equipments etc
After receiving 6500 books form Somalilanders in the Diaspora, there has
been an emerging need for effective library, SAREDO with the collaboration
of Daryeel Foundation (The Netherlands) and Berbera College has
proposed the rehabilitation of the college main library ,the program was
supported by NCDO; Nationale Commissie voor Internationale
Samenwerking en Duurzame Ontwikkeling (National Committee for
International Cooperation and Sustainable Development, the Netherlands).
this rehabilitation program contained
1. Installing new locally made shelves and tables in the college library
2. Main library Resource Registration
3. The formation of library Code of Courtesy
SAREDO with the assistance of local volunteers had implemented the
library interior works, 33 pieces of new library shelves has been made for
the college .6 out of this figure is double faced (back to back designed to
install the library center) with the two times capacity of the rest.
The total capacity of the currently made shelves is (2000 books). In
addition to the shelves 8 reading tables (150cm*120cm) has been installed
.it can carry 48 library users (minimum).and 56 library users (maximum).
The first phase has taken 4 months to be finalized SAREDO how ever, will
continue this Technical Assistance Programme for Berbera College. This
time, equipments(computers etc ), the installation of Marine Biology Library
and Academic Ecellence will be on the top of our focus. We are very
garatefull to all parners of the finalized program, these are the Berbera
College community both the staff and students, Daryeel Foundation, the
NCDO, the Somaliland Societies in Europe and America, all the local
volunteers and SAREDO project running group.
SAREDO is also warly welcoming to all new partners ( institutions,
organizations) that are interested to join the Berbera college technical
Assistance Program.
